| ahh yes, the weekend. |
[Jul. 17th, 2006|10:30 am] |
What a fabulous weekend! Saturday afternoon (after sleeping in until noon) Henne and I packed a backpack and headed for Lübeck. We proceeded to steal his grandfather's motorcycle and head up through the back roads along the little coast-line Germany has to a sweet little beach along the Baltic Sea. Everything was fabulous: our picnick, the sunshine, the naked German people (what more could you ask for on a Saturday afternoon).
On Sunday we met up with Audrey in Hamburg's beautiful park, Planten un Blomen, and picnicked to the live Brazilian music in the background before heading up to Lockstedt (My old dorm-stomping ground).
Reluctantly I have arrived at Monday and the reality of screaming children will settle in within the hour. (However, the promises of a kayak tour through Lübeck next weekend are in development)
PS: More to come on my (half)-chance meeting of Tom Tykwer last Thursday! |

| utterly embarrassing. |
[Jun. 14th, 2006|08:47 am] |
Yep, it's another post about soccer. The next four weeks I will involuntarily eat, sleep and breath soccer. You just cant avoid it here in Germany. EVERYTHING (When I say everything, I mean they've re-named all the pastries in the bakery after soccer plays) here is soccer. Actually, I'm quite happy it's not baseball or football because I like the sport.
So America played against the Czech Republic on Monday. I broke out the face paint again and this time painted their entire faces to look like the American flag. But it didnt help... the boys failed me. I think they spent more time rolling around on the field than they did playing soccer. Afterwords my dad and I spent some time theorizing about America and soccer. He had watched the great game between Trinidad and Tobago against Sweden. This was T&T's first time at the World Cup and the fact that they played a 0:0 game was very impressive. They celebrated like it was a victory. My dad commented that America has a very hard time embracing a sport that can celebrate a tied game.
On an even more embarrassing note, the US team is traveling around Bush-style. The team base is located in down town Hamburg and of course they've shut down the very busy street to traffic in front of their hotel. Every morning a huge parade of police cars escort the team to their practice field which is very close to our Kindergarten. The kids love to run and press their noses up against the window when they drive by. |

| Fußballfieber! |

Germany is going nuts over the World Cup. Everyone is in high spirits and all decked out in black, red and gold afro wigs. The trains are full of fans... every little kid has a German flag painted on his cheek. I did my best to infiltrate the little kiddies and sent half of them home with little American flags painted on their faces. Oh how their parents must love me! Germany vs. Coasta Rica starts tonight at 8pm... Go Fußballfieber! |

| old friends, good times. |
[Jun. 5th, 2006|02:26 pm] |

Old friends, good times. The last three weekends we've had visitors! I'm so happy to finally have a place to call my own... and to entertain. John from Oregon came out three weeks ago for a long weekend and I had the opportunity to show him Hamburg and Lübeck in the rain. He's an Oregonian so he could handle it. The following weekend Henne's friend Marie (I claim her too) came up from Wuppertal and we had a great time over good food and lots of laughter. Last weekend Tobi stopped by between his adventures around the world and we played hard and watched the sun rise over Hamburg.
I updated my website with some new pics. http://emilypasha.com/photos/page4.html |

I HAVE A WORK PERMIT!!!!!!!!!!!! Or at least that's what my boss heard from the good but very slow people in Hamburg. Now they just have to send it back to the office where they give me a visa and I should be well on my way to being an expatriate. It looks like I can probably start up work on Monday.
AND I'm going to Santana tonight! One of Henne's co-workers had tickets but couldnt go because his wife's father died so he sold them to Henne for a very good deal. I'm quite excited...it's been so long since I've been to a concert.
AND the weather's warm enough outside that I got a sunburn from walking around in Lübeck yesterday. It was Henne's grandmother's birthday so I drove up with Henne and spent some time with his other grandparents in their garden and then spent the afternoon walking around the cute posh little streets of Lübeck... man oh man do I love that city. We finished off the day with Strawberry shortcake and champagne with the birthday girl (the grandmother we used to live with) and some of Henne's family in their garden and had a great night eating Raclette and talking late into the night. |

Oh yes, I topped all dorkiness! My brain was overwhelmed by adrenaline by the thought of this cool side board I could fix up... so I decided to play superwoman and drive down and figure out a way to get it in the car by myself. Brilliant Emily, brilliant. The upper cupboard part wasnt too heavy or too big, so I decided I'd try to get the bottom part in first. Um hello, this is a woman with a ruptured disc trying to lift an over sided (probably way over 100lb) chest into the back of a Golf. I overheard a woman up on a balcony watching my amusing attempts tell her husband that he should probably help me. 2 minutes later a really nice guy came down and offered to help. Yep, too big. There was no way it would fit so I convinced the guy to help me lift the thing onto a broken garden lounge chair (with two worthless wheels) that was also sitting in the pile of treasure. So now my plan was to roll the sucker home...haha, ya right! To my rescue appeared two men in an opened back truck. They could tell by the evil look in my eye what I was about to ask them... and they were right. Oh the wonders of a little pink tank top! It's worth more than gold. 5 minutes later my lovely (and in great need of a little Emily lovin') sideboard was dropped off in my front yard. This beautiful, sweaty process was observed by my landlady and her 11 year old son. They found it pretty funny and when I asked if I could leave it on the front lawn until my boyfriend got home she proceeded to say "Sure, I can mow around it." Whoops...so off I went and enlisted the help of two other very nice men from the house that I live in to carry it inside for me. Tah-Dah! And now my lovely little guy has safely arrived at his new home... and I'm a sweaty, happy mess. |

Hmmm... I'm met with a dilema. Tomorrow is pick up day for extra trash(furniture and other cool things Germans like to throw away). Because i live in the villa part of town there are TONS of treasures sitting on the side of the street. Most of it goes in a flash. In fact hundereds of people from Poland drive big trucks out here and load them up to sell back home. The problem is, I just found the coolest old side board with hanging cupboard above it. I'm shocked it's not gone yet and I have no way to pick it up alone. Henne's at work for at least another 3 hours and I dont know anybody here in Ahrensburg yet. Should I risk it and see if it's still there when Henne get's home... or play Ober-dork and go sit by it for 3 hours? |

| It's Springtime for Emily...and Germany. |
[May. 3rd, 2006|08:59 am] |

Last Sunday the cute little town of Ahrensburg had a plant flea market in the town square. I went down and picked up three new little friends. The problem is, they need names. Help me out here!
On May day Henne and I packed a fabulous little picnic and headed to Planten and Blomen (the huge, beautiful park in Hamburg). All the spring flowers are in bloom and the trees all have blossoms. Germans like their holidays and everyone has May day off, so the park was pretty full. Man Hamburg is beautiful!

| Mmmmm...food |
[Apr. 29th, 2006|11:59 pm] |
Today I sat down and planned this weeks meals before we went grocery shopping and while looking through my two amazing Mollie Katzen cookbooks I ran across several loose, hand written recipes from random sources. Almost all of them were some kind of amazing salad from a friend or salad combination that I've always wanted to try. Thus the FABULOUS SALAD WEEK was born.
This week in the Guschov /Badekow Residence the following will be created and consumed:
•roasted beet, goat cheese and caramelized walnut salad, served over arugula greens •baby spinach, gorgonzola, apple and caramelized walnut salad with white wine vinegar, olive oil, sesame seed and red onion dressing •marinated Portabello mushroom salad with sesame/soy and crushed chili pepper marinade •bay shrimp, cucumber, cerery root and citrus salad with orange, lime and soy dressing
And because a salad just feels naked without soup...
•Anne's curried yellow pea soup will fill out the menu.
Inspired by my salad frenzy, I've decided to start posting some of my favorite recipes HERE. |

I have new domestic toys! Between my trip to IKEA yesterday and my trip to down town Ahrensburg today I have lots of new little treasures. Money can't buy happiness...but it sure can buy fun things! We splurged and bought a one-hole Melitta coffee maker. Those little suckers are spendy if you want them in porcelain. I also bought 5 meters of fabric so I can recover a chair and make some pillows (now all I need is a sewing machine). And I bought a medium sized frying pan to round out my pot and pan collection. Buying things is fun! I sure wish I had a work permit to support my little habit.

4 hours left! I'm so excited I couldnt sleep last night. We're going to pack the car and head down with the first load and get the keys here shortly. It'll be about a week until we get a phone and HIGH SPEED INTERNET hooked up! (So I may be lost to the world for this short period of euphoria). |

Well it looks like the bad work permit fairy bit me. They're still waiting for paperwork to come in from various offices, so it looks like it could still take a while. However, I do have to admit I'm slightly happy to have this week off because I'M MOVING TO AHRENSBURG TOMORROW!!! This last week has gone by SO slowly. Henne's had to work late and I've been stuck trying to entertain myself in a half-packed 10X10 ft room (with expensive dial-up).
We love his grandparents dearly and are extremely thankful that we've been able to live in the front of their house; however, the time has come to MOVE OUT! It's not just the not being able to shower, cook or do laundry part...lately they like to come and peer into our windows to see what we're doing (or walk into our front door without knocking). So every second longer we have to wait for our shower, kitchen, two-person corner bathtub seems like eternity! Tomorrow at 2pm feels like it's 5 years away! |

Today we got our new phone number. 6 more days until we move in! Time is going by SO slowly sitting at home waiting for next Wednesday. At this point I really wish I was working. At least it would be a distraction. Henne put up a few photos (taken by the previous renter). You can see them HERE. |

Whoops, I guess I've gotten even a little more time off. I talked to my boss yesterday to tell her about my work permit status and she got cold feet and said I shouldnt come in until I have it. I've officially been volunteering until my permit comes through but now I guess I'll just have to sit at home and wait. Grrr!!!! With the move coming up, I sure could have used the hours. I'm going to make some calls on Monday and see if I cant speed things up! |

Whoops, it looks like I enumerated my juvenile poultry prior to full incubation.
I went to city hall today to check on the status of my work permit and it looks like they decided to take their sweet time. The woman here was very nice and called to the office where she sent it to 3 weeks ago. I guess they have everything, but have no intention to process it anytime soon. They said it pretty blatantly too. At least she fought for me over the phone, but I guess I'll remain in limbo until they decide to stop drinking coffee and stamp my damn paper! I just wish they would hurry up a bit, considering I could sure use a paycheck to pay for the rent that's due in 2 weeks! |
